A colony that just crossed a population milestone confronts the arithmetic of water, air and a conversation seventeen minutes behind Earth.

VALLES MARINERIS — Word that the settlement had passed 50,000 residents reached Earth on the last day of September, delayed the roughly seventeen minutes that now separate the two planets as their orbits pull apart. The number landed on Mars as a question rather than a celebration. Each new arrival is another share of recycled water, pressurized air and greenhouse yield drawn from a system engineered for fewer. "Fifty thousand was a target for twenty years," said settlement logistics coordinator Dana Ruiz in a relayed dispatch. "Now it is a floor, and the next ship is already loading." Council debates run awkwardly across the comms lag: a proposal sent from the surface waits a third of an hour for Earth's reply, so the colony increasingly decides for itself. The milestone, residents say, is real and hard-won. What it obliges them to build before the following manifest arrives is the argument no delay can resolve.
