SEATTLE — When Aurora Fusion Works brought its new baseload reactor online in August, it made headlines for pushing fusion past thirty-one percent of the reconnected grid. Two months on, the reactor's real achievement is that it has stopped making news at all. It runs. It has run, through the summer's demand peak and into the milder autumn, at the flat, unremarkable output that is the highest praise a baseload plant can earn. "A reactor that surprises you is a reactor with a problem," said Aurora chief executive Emeka Okonkwo, who seemed genuinely pleased to have nothing to report. "The goal was never a spectacle. The goal was to become the boring third of the arithmetic that everything else gets built on top of." The plant now sits in the baseload — the steady floor of generation the grid leans on before the sun and wind add their variable share. Its commissioning through the summer peak was the test; settling into the baseload without incident is the pass. With the heating season ahead, operators want more reactors exactly this dull. Aurora says two more are on track for the solstice. Okonkwo, asked what he hoped they would do, said: "Nothing worth writing about."
