How We Got Here: The Century That Learned to Count in the Hundreds of Millions

There is a figure in this month's paper that ought to stop a reader cold, and my worry is that it no longer does. Registered climate migrants have climbed past 120 million. When I began teaching, "millions displaced" was a sentence that emptied a lecture hall into silence; today it is a line item, filed between a fusion figure and a market note. The mind, mercifully and dangerously, adapts to any scale you feed it long enough. That adaptation is how twelve billion people function amid a +2.8 °C world without seizing up — and it is also how 120 million individual displacements dissolve into a single grey abstraction. The history of this century, when it is written, will not turn on whether we knew the number. We always knew the number. It will turn on whether we ever managed to keep feeling it. So I offer no forecast today, only a request: read the figure again, slowly, and put one face to it before you turn the page.
