The Number Is Not the Story. The Standpipe Is.
We report the migrant count each week as if it were weather. It is a sum of doorways, and we should say so.

Every week this paper prints a larger number — registered climate migrants now nearing 116 million, up from past 112 million a month ago — and every week the number does a little violence to the thing it counts. A figure that size stops meaning people and starts meaning weather: a front moving across a map, unarguable and impersonal. That is a failure of language, and the desk that commits it most is my own. The count is real and rising, and it will keep rising through the hot months; pretending otherwise helps no one. But a number is a roof over a hundred million particular rooms, and the honest sentence is the one that keeps a doorway in view. When Hearth Relief warns of pace, it is warning about standpipes running dry in specific districts on specific mornings. When a utility rations a neighborhood, that is where 116 million becomes forty-one families before noon. I am not arguing we stop counting. I am arguing we never let the sum swallow the addends. The number is the shadow. The people are the thing casting it.
