"As of the martian dawn, Valles Marineris is home to fifty thousand," the colony administration's bulletin read, in the flat register the settlement prefers for its largest moments. By the time the words reached Earth, the number was already stale — a few souls larger, the administrators noted with the settlement's particular humor, than when they pressed send. It is a threshold the colony chased for more than a decade, from the six-person research outpost of the fifties to a rift-long chain of pressurized districts strung under the largest canyon in the solar system. There was no single ribbon to cut. The fifty-thousandth resident was not identified and did not wish to be; the milestone is a count, not a coronation. "We stopped throwing parties for round numbers years ago," administrator Tomas Rhee wrote. "But we let ourselves stop, this morning, and look at the rift, and feel the size of what fifty thousand people breathing here actually means. Then we went back to work. The fourth district needs its second airlock before the dust season."
