The Word 'Provisional' Is the Most Honest Thing We Print
When our engineers refuse to call the corridors 'solved', they are teaching the rest of us how to hold a hard-won relief.

There is a habit among the people who keep the water flowing this year, and it is worth defending. Ask a corridor engineer whether the crisis is over and she will say only that this season held — never that it is solved. The temptation, at 116 million registered migrants and climbing, is to seize any good news and inflate it into a promise. The engineers refuse, and they are right to. "Solved" is the word that empties the shelters of funding the winter before the corridor fails. "Provisional" keeps the pumping stations staffed and the membranes stocked against the season none of us can see. This is not pessimism; it is competence wearing plain clothes. A civilization at twelve billion, feeding itself off a third of its grid from fusion and the rest from nerve, cannot afford the comfort of finished sentences. Let us borrow the engineers' discipline. The relief is real. It is also provisional. Both are true, and only saying both keeps it real.
