A Two-World Festival Learns to Live With Sixteen Minutes of Silence

MARSEILLE / VALLES MARINERIS — The Two Worlds arts exchange, staged this week across a hall in Marseille and a habitat in Valles Marineris, made no attempt to hide the sixteen-minute gap between the planets. It built the show around it. Musicians on Earth recorded a phrase; a quarter-hour later, players on Mars answered it; the audience watched the conversation unfold across the delay, call and response separated by the width of the solar system. "We stopped fighting the silence and started composing for it," said festival director Yara Solano in Marseille. "Sixteen minutes is not dead air. It is the rest between the notes, and it happens to be the size of a planet." The Martian settlement, on the edge of fifty thousand residents, sent recorded ensembles rather than a live feed, because live, across that gulf, is a word that no longer means what it means on Earth. Audiences on both worlds, organizers said, wept at the same phrases — sixteen minutes apart.
