The Heating-Season Countdown: Can the Build-Out Keep Its Promise?

REYKJAVÍK / SEATTLE — In the northern hemisphere the days are shortening now, and every grid operator's spreadsheet has the same two columns: reactors expected online by December, and the load a cold snap will throw at the wires. Fusion carries close to a third of the reconnected grid, a figure that would have read as science fiction a generation ago and now reads, on the operators' screens, as merely not enough for the worst week of winter. Aurora Fusion Works, whose late-summer reactor pushed the fraction past thirty-one percent, says two more baseload units will commission before the solstice. Whether they arrive on time is the question that keeps the control rooms awake. "Summer heat we cook through; it is miserable but it is predictable," said grid analyst Sofia Lindqvist in Reykjavík. "The heating season is a different animal. Demand spikes on the coldest morning, exactly when a stalled reactor hurts most." The build-out has kept its promises before, through worse. The operators are counting the units and the days, and hoping the two columns meet before the frost does.
