The Resettlement Towns That Grew a District a Year Take Stock of the Summer's Arrivals

TAMALE — You can date the resettlement town of New Kintampo by its rings, like a tree. The oldest district, laid down eight years ago, has shade trees now and a market that argues about prices; the newest, poured this spring, still smells of concrete and holds the summer's arrivals. The Passage Trust, which manages the migration corridors feeding towns like this across three continents, took stock this week as the registered-migrant count climbed past 116 million — a number so large the Trust has learned to distrust it, because no one moves as a number. "A hundred and sixteen million is a headline," said Trust coordinator Abena Mensah, walking the new district's unpaved lanes. "A family of six that reached us in August with a goat and a solar panel is the work." New Kintampo grew by a district this year, as it has most years, absorbing the movement the warming belt keeps sending north and inland. The Trust counts arrivals the way the town counts rings — not to marvel at the total but to know how much shade next year will need. The summer's families are housed. The next season is already on its way.
