The Sahel Corridor's Audit Lands: Relief Is Real, and Unevenly Shared

NIAMEY — The Global Concordat Council's auditors did not soften the number, and to their credit they did not soften the second one either. The Sahel desalination-and-conveyance corridor — the spine of pipes and pumping stations that carried treated water inland across the driest belt of the continent — moved more water to more people this summer than any single project in the corridor's history. That is the first story, and it is true. The second, buried in the same ledger, is that the relief pooled where the pipe already ran. Cities strung along the spine drank; the villages a day's walk off it queued at the same trucks they queued at last year. "The corridor works exactly as it was built to work," said auditor Salif Traoré at the Niamey briefing. "It was built as a spine, and a spine serves what it touches." The Concordat's Secretary-General, Ingrid Halvorsen, called the finding "relief we can measure and inequity we can no longer pretend not to see." Verdant Yield AG, whose corridor-fed farms posted record yields, was named in the same paragraph as the off-spine hamlets that saw none of it. The water is real. So is the map of who got it.
