The Airlock and the Standpipe: On the Numbers We Choose to Feel

There is a dispatch from Mars this week about an airlock one seal short of a round number, and a dispatch from Jakarta about a standpipe two hours long. They are the same story wearing different weather. We are a species of twelve billion that has learned to survive by counting: 116 million migrants, plus-2.8 degrees, a third of the grid on fusion, five percent of us augmented. The numbers are true and the numbers are anesthetic. They let us hold the scale without feeling it. What the colony administrator understood, describing a door a family walks through on Thursday, is that a statistic only becomes a conscience when it narrows to a single human at a single threshold. I do not argue for fewer numbers; the Meridian is built on them. I argue for the discipline of the second sentence — the one that turns the count into a face. A reservoir at two-thirds mean is arithmetic. Nur Aisyah's two water cans are the argument. We should not need the second to believe the first. But we do, and pretending otherwise is how large numbers get ignored.
