A Month After Brazil Voted, the Augmentation Question the Continent Has Watched All Year Refuses to Settle

BRASÍLIA — The lines are long gone from the capital, but the argument they stood in has not left with them — augmented and unaugmented citizens who queued together last month to decide, in part, whether they should be allowed to. The measures the campaign flattened into a single word, *cap*, remain the country's open wound: limits on the depth of somatic and neural augmentation a citizen may legally carry, and the question of whether enhanced and unenhanced children should share the same classrooms. The Naturalist bloc, which rode near a quarter of the electorate after a year of momentum, calls the outcome a mandate to protect the ninety-five percent. Its opponents call it the first fence in a century of fences. Between them stands the fraying middle the parties keep trying to claim and keep failing to hold. "I have one augmented child and one who is not," said Brasília voter Inês Tavares, who has become a kind of national shorthand for the split. "The ballot asked me which future I wanted for them.
