The Number Is Necessary. The Naming Is A Discipline.

We count the season's migration because governance requires it — but a paper that stops at the count has done only half its work.

The Number Is Necessary. The Naming Is A Discipline. — The Lost Archive, 2124
The Lost Archive · 19 Sep 2124 · a work of fiction. M.R.

There is a temptation, in a season like this one, to let the tally do the moral labor. The figure — climbing through the hundred-and-teens of millions as the heat corridors widen — is precise, portable, and useful to every ministry that must plan for it. It is also, on its own, a way of not looking. A number is what we reach for when a person is too much to hold, and there is no shame in reaching for it; the shame is in mistaking it for the whole account. This paper has argued before that the statistic and the name are both true and only one travels easily. The discipline is to keep sending the harder one. When Hearth Relief International tabulates the corridor traffic, it is doing necessary arithmetic. When it insists that each figure had a door it walked out of, it is doing something the arithmetic cannot. The count tells us how large the season was. Only the naming tells us what it cost, and a record that forgets the difference is not a record at all — only a receipt.
