The Milestone We Should Refuse to Round Off

As the migrant count nears 116 million, treating each new figure as a headline risks turning people into a ticker.

The Milestone We Should Refuse to Round Off — The Lost Archive, 2124

There is a temptation, every time the registered-migrant figure climbs, to reach for the round number and the alarmed headline. We are approaching 116 million now, up from 108 million in July, and the arithmetic invites a certain theatre: the count as scoreboard, each crossing a fresh shock. I want to argue against the theatre. The number is not rising because something new happened this month; it is rising because the world we already made keeps producing the same outcome, steadily, in a heat that will not relent. To dramatise each increment is to imply the crisis is the increment — that 116 is the story and 108 was a different one. It was not. The honest framing is duller and harder: this is a continuous condition, not a series of events, and it will not be met by the periodic gasp. It will be met, if at all, by the unglamorous patience of corridors that stay open and ledgers that stay funded after the cameras have moved on.
