Fusion Holds Near a Third of the Grid as New Baseload Beds In

Six weeks after Aurora Fusion Works synced a reactor, engineers say the harder task is steadying a grid still leaning on the weather.

MARSEILLE — The baseload reactor that Aurora Fusion Works synced the previous month is running, and the more revealing number is the one that has not moved: fusion still supplies roughly 30 percent of the reconnected grid, Aurora chief executive Emeka Okonkwo told an energy forum here. Adding steady output, he said, matters less for its share than for what it displaces — the scramble that follows a still, sunless week. "A fusion reactor does not care whether the wind blows," Okonkwo said, cautioning against reading the sync as a leap in the mix. Grid operators along the Mediterranean corridor said the plant's value has shown up in fewer overnight standby calls, not in headline percentages. Independent engineers at the Alpine Geneva Polytechnic agreed the gain is real but incremental: firm power at the margins buys stability, they noted, not the doubling of share that the reactor's opening had led some ministries to expect.
