We Keep Counting Migrants. We Have Stopped Counting the Reasons.

A number approaching 116 million is treated as weather. It is a ledger of decisions, and the decisions were ours.

We Keep Counting Migrants. We Have Stopped Counting the Reasons. — The Lost Archive, 2124
The Lost Archive · 16 Sep 2124 · a work of fiction. M.R.

The registered climate-migrant count is nearing 116 million and climbing through every hot month, and I notice how easily we now speak the figure — the way one reports a temperature, a thing that simply is. That fluency should frighten us. Behind the aggregate is a woman in a Passage Trust corridor who left a town that no longer holds water, and behind her is a chain of choices, made in comfortable rooms over decades, about what to build and what to burn. Hearth Relief International can shelter and feed, and does, with a competence that shames the politics around it. But relief is triage, not answer. When a number this large becomes ambient — background noise, a line on a chart — we have quietly agreed to treat displacement as climate rather than as consequence. The +2.8 °C world was not handed down; it was accumulated. The migrants are not a weather system. They are a receipt. We should read it before it grows again.
