Two Days After the Million-Qubit Demo, the Question Is What It Secures
Singapore's Q-Net milestone dazzled the field; researchers are already asking what it will and will not do.

SINGAPORE — When the Singapore Institute ran a million-qubit processor across the Q-Net backbone on Thursday, the demonstration drew applause from laboratories on three continents. Two days on, the mood among researchers is admiring and carefully bounded. Q-Net secures channels; it does not, physicists stress, send messages faster than light. "People hear 'quantum' and imagine instant communication with Mars," said Dr. Priyanka Rao, a colleague who watched the run over the backbone. "What we proved is that the channel is unbreakable, not that it is instantaneous." The delay to the Valles Marineris colonies still runs near sixteen minutes each way this month and will only widen as the planets separate. The Institute frames the milestone as a scaling proof — a processor an order of magnitude larger than last year's, running stably over the secured network. What it buys, its physicists say, is trust in the channel. What it cannot buy is speed across the void.
