Brasília Votes Within the Month, and the Whole Continent Is Holding Its Breath

BRASÍLIA — The question on the ballot is narrow — whether to cap the enhancement of minors and route augmented and natural-born children into separate schooling — but everyone here understands it is standing in for a larger one that no ballot can hold: whether a country can be shared by people who are, increasingly, built differently. With the vote now set for the coming weeks, Brazil has become the continent's test case. The Naturalist bloc, polling near a quarter of the electorate, frames the cap as protection; the enhanced minority, still small but growing fast, hears in "separate" the oldest ugly word in the political dictionary. Between them stands a majority that wants, mostly, to be left alone to raise its children without choosing a side. "I have one augmented daughter and one who is not," a São Paulo mother told a rally I attended, "and the parties keep handing me a knife to divide them with." What is being decided in Brasília is not really schooling. It is whether the augmentation divide becomes a line that governments draw, or one that citizens refuse. The continent, watching, has not exhaled.
