In the Sahel, the Corridor's First Season Ends With the Taps Still Running

AGADEZ — Fatima Ahmoudou keeps a chalk mark on the wall of her courtyard for every day the pipe delivered, and this summer the wall filled up. The Sahel water corridor, the desalination-and-transfer spine argued into existence at last winter's Concordat, reached her district in June, and by her count it has not failed since. Her four children washed with clean water through the worst weeks of a +2.8-degree summer; the standpipe queues that turned violent two years ago never formed. By any honest ledger, the corridor worked. And yet Fatima does not describe it as a gift. "Before, the water was ours and it was cruel," she said, sweeping the last of the day's dust. "Now it is kind, and it belongs to someone in another city." The taps run because a utility she has never met decides they should, priced by a meter she cannot read, along a line she cannot repair. The season she survived was real. So is the quiet unease of a household that traded thirst for a leash it did not choose — the century's characteristic bargain, made one courtyard at a time, and mostly, this summer, accepted.
