With Its Review Still Open, an Implant Firm Slows Its Own Rollout

Somaform's contested neural-interface stays under regulator scrutiny, and one clinic finds patients doing the waiting for it.

The safety review of Somaform Augmetics' neural-interface line remained open and contested this week, with regulators requesting a further round of clinical data and the company declining to name a timeline. Augmented humans now make up better than five percent of the population, but the frontier — direct neural interfaces — is exactly where the review has drawn its line. At a fitting clinic in Lagos, technician Amara Nwosu says the caution has traveled from the regulators to the waiting room. "People ask more questions than they did a year ago, and they wait," she said, describing patients who defer the elective procedure pending a clearer verdict. Founder Julian Morrow, a longtime augmentation-rights advocate, argues the scrutiny is proportionate and welcome; critics call the pace overdue. Neither side claims the matter is settled, because it is not. For Nwosu, the review is not an abstraction but a queue of hesitant people, each weighing a body they cannot un-modify.
