On enhancement, water, and Mars: three small groups are setting terms the rest of us will live inside.

The Century Is Being Written by Its Minorities. The Majority Should Read Along. — The Lost Archive, 2124
The Lost Archive · 13 Sep 2124 · a work of fiction. M.R.

Three facts sat near each other on our pages this week, and they rhyme. Roughly one in twenty humans is augmented, yet that twentieth is drafting the hiring rules and school tracks the other nineteen will inherit. Some fifty thousand people in Valles Marineris are learning, at sixteen minutes' remove, habits of patience the twelve billion of us on Earth have unlearned. And relief agencies count migrants approaching 116 million — a majority of the displaced whose futures are decided in rooms they cannot enter. The pattern is not conspiracy; it is arithmetic. Consequential change is made first by the few who are closest to it, and only later ratified by the many. That is not, in itself, wrong. What is wrong is pretending the many were consulted. The honest posture is neither resentment nor deference but attention: read the terms while they are still being written. The majority's power was never to author the century. It is to refuse to sign it unread.
