On the Eve of the Demonstration, Singapore Rehearses Its Million-Qubit Run
Engineers walk the paper through a final dry run, and are careful to say what the machine can and cannot yet do.

SINGAPORE — The day before the Singapore Institute puts its million-qubit processor through its public paces over the Q-Net backbone, the mood in the lab is not triumph but the particular calm of people who have checked everything twice and intend to check it a third time. They let us watch a dry run. The processor held its coherence through a full rehearsal problem, the error-correction lattice caught what it was built to catch, and the Q-Net secured the channel exactly as advertised — the encryption unbreakable, the link itself carrying no faster than light, a point the engineers repeated until it was clear they were tired of being misquoted on it. What impressed was less the scale than the honesty. "Tomorrow you will see a machine do something no machine has done at this size," the lead engineer said, hands flat on the console. "You will also see the edges of it. It solves what it is built to solve. It is not an oracle, and we will be the first to tell you where it stops." The million qubits are real. So, they insisted, are the limits. The demonstration is tomorrow. Tonight they rehearse the modesty along with the marvel.
