The Number We Keep Rounding Down

When a count of the displaced climbs past 116 million, the habit of the round figure becomes a small daily act of forgetting.

We have a way, in this trade and out of it, of saying "over a hundred million" and feeling we have been precise. It is a comfortable phrase. It stopped being true so long ago that repeating it is no longer rounding — it is retreating. The registered climate-migrant count is approaching 116 million this month, per the Passage Trust, sixteen million more than the figure our comfortable phrase still gestures at. That gap is roughly the population of a large nation, misplaced by a habit of speech. I do not think we round down out of malice. We do it because 116 million is harder to hold than "over a hundred," and the mind reaches for the handle it can grip. But the count is not a milestone we passed and may now stop watching; it is a line still rising, and every time we round it down we quietly agree to be surprised again next month. Precision here is not pedantry. It is the least we owe people we will never meet: to say how many, exactly, and not look away from the digits.
