A Welder's Implant Doubled Her Shift and Split Her Family

As augmented humans pass 5 percent of the workforce, one household shows how enhancement divides those who take it from those who won't.

DETROIT — When Aisha Coleman had a neural-motor interface fitted last year, her fabrication output rose enough to keep her line open when three others closed. Her brother Andre, working the same trade unenhanced, watched his hours shrink. The Coleman kitchen table has become a small model of a global argument, now that augmented humans make up more than 5 percent of the population and a larger share of skilled labor. The interface Aisha wears is a Somaform Augmetics line still under an open safety review that regulators have neither cleared nor closed — a fact she thinks about on the days her hands tingle after a shift. "I don't regret it," she said. "But I don't tell Andre that." Founder Julian Morrow maintains the technology is safe and the review routine. For the Colemans, the technology's risks are abstract and its arithmetic is not: one paycheck grew, the other thinned, and a family learned that a device can enter a body and still change a house.
