The Century Is Learning to Say "Enough" and Mean Two Different Things

There is a word doing quiet double duty across our front pages this week, and it is worth stopping on. In Brasília, the Naturalist bloc says "enough" and means a limit on how far a human may be enhanced. In Jakarta, a family at a distribution point says "enough" and means the water ran out before their turn. Both are demands for a boundary; both are honest; and they point in opposite directions. One asks us to hold a line against too much. The other pleads against too little. A humane century has to hold both without pretending they are the same argument. The temptation is to let the loud fight — who may be augmented, who may not — crowd out the quiet one, the arithmetic of a reservoir dropping below an intake with 116 million people already on the move. Enough enhancement and enough water are not rival slogans. They are the same civilization asking, from two ends, whether it can still draw a line that includes everyone inside it.
