GENEVA — Nearly a month after Aurora Fusion Works synced its new baseload reactor, grid operators say the addition has done the quiet work asked of it: holding fusion near 30 percent of the reconnected grid through a stretch of peak cooling demand that would once have forced rolling curtailment. The reactor, brought online in early August, is Aurora's answer to a summer in which air-conditioning load across southern Europe ran days at record highs against a global mean anomaly of +2.8°C. "Baseload is not glamorous. Baseload is the difference between a hospital keeping its lights and a hospital not," said Emeka Okonkwo, the firm's chief executive, in remarks at an Alpine Geneva Polytechnic briefing. Engineers there caution that a single reactor does not close the gap; demand climbs faster than supply in the corridors absorbing new arrivals. Aurora frames the unit as one plank of many. The grid, for now, is steadier than it was in July — and no one at the briefing called it solved.
