BRASÍLIA — Three weeks after the federal vote, Brazil's resurgent Naturalist bloc has widened its reach from the ballot box into the drafting rooms, in the clearest sign yet that augmentation, not jobs, will define this legislature. The bloc finished past a quarter of the electorate on a platform of enhancement caps and separate schooling — short of a majority, large enough to set the terms of every committee it sits on — and its rise has dragged the writing of the rules onto the terrain of the "natural-born" question. The sharpest edge is no longer rhetoric but the ordinary machinery of a life — hiring and housing, where enhanced citizens report an accelerating quiet exclusion that the bloc's language has made speakable. "They do not say the word. They say 'culture fit,' they say 'community preference,' and I do not get the flat," said Recife applicant Lucas Ferreira, augmented since childhood. Incumbent coalition leaders are trying to hold a middle that is thinning by the week. The augmented remain a small minority nationwide, but a fast-growing and increasingly organized one, and their advocates warn that a caps-and-separation platform, once normalized at the ballot box, does not easily reverse.
