A Corridor City Reopens Its Library, and the Line Is for Books

JAKARTA — In a northern Jakarta district that has absorbed families from three flooded provinces, the queue outside the reopened Kali Besar reading room is, for once, not for water. The small library — shuttered through the worst of the corridor influx and restored by neighborhood volunteers — opened its doors this week to a line that curled past the shopfronts by mid-morning. "People here have learned to wait for necessities. We wanted to give them something worth waiting for that isn't," said Sri Handayani, the retired teacher who organized the restoration and now runs its lending desk from memory. The collection is modest and secondhand; the demand is not. Volunteers report the children's shelves emptying fastest, and the reading tables filling with adults who, staff say, come as much for the quiet as the pages. In a district defined by scarcity and movement, a room full of borrowed books offers the one thing the corridor cannot ration: an hour that belongs to you. The line, Handayani said, is the review.
