Aurora's New Reactor Steadies a Grid Bracing for Winter

A month after the Aurora Fusion Works baseload unit synced, engineers say the margin held through the cooling peak — but the harder test is the cold.

GENEVA — The baseload reactor that Aurora Fusion Works brought online the previous month has, by the utility's own reckoning, done the unglamorous thing it was built for: it has held. With commercial fusion supplying roughly 30% of the reconnected grid, the new unit absorbed the tail of the summer cooling peak without a single controlled shed, according to operating logs the company shared with grid regulators. "The reactor is not the story. The steadiness is the story," said Emeka Okonkwo, Aurora's chief executive, in Geneva. He was careful to temper the relief. Cooling demand rises in daylight, when the grid is fullest; the temperate north's heating season arrives in the dark, when it is thinnest, and asks the same margin to hold in reverse. Aurora expects to run the unit through winter under close watch by the operators who reconnected the northern lines. A steadier grid, Okonkwo said, is measured not in the summer it survived but in the January it does not notice.
