Singapore Prepares a Million-Qubit Demonstration Over Q-Net

Physicists say a public run scheduled for mid-September will test scale, not the laws of physics.

Singapore Prepares a Million-Qubit Demonstration Over Q-Net — The Lost Archive, 2124

SINGAPORE — Engineers at the Singapore Institute are cabling a processor they say will cross a million qubits in a public demonstration this month, run across the Q-Net backbone that already carries the world's quantum-secured traffic. The date on the invitation is 14 September; the caution in the briefing is older. "A million qubits is an engineering milestone, not a new physics," said Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, the Institute physicist narrating the run for a lay audience. "Q-Net secures our channel. It has never sent a message faster than light, and it will not on Tuesday." The distinction matters because the demonstration invites the usual overreach — that scale will conjure telepathy between Earth and its orbital stations, or shave the sixteen-minute gulf now separating Valles Marineris from Earth's antennas. It will not. What a million controllable qubits could do, Tan said, is fold problems in materials and climate modeling that today's machines merely approximate. The Institute will publish its error rates alongside the headline number, a discipline Tan called "the boring part that keeps us honest."
