Valles Marineris Seals Its Fourth Pressurized District as the Count Nears Fifty Thousand — The Lost Archive, 2124

VALLES MARINERIS — The seal is the ceremony. When the fourth pressurized district of the great rift settlement closed its final bulkhead and equalized to habitat pressure this week, there was no fanfare that reached Earth — only a bulletin, arriving roughly sixteen minutes late, noting that the district was live and the residents were moving in. With it, the colony's permanent count edges toward 50,000, a threshold the settlement has chased for the better part of a decade, one airlock and one poured wall at a time. The pace is deliberately unhurried; on Mars, haste is how atmospheres are lost. "We do not open a district until we would sleep our own children in it that night," the colony administrator wrote, in the flat register the settlement has made its house style. The fifth district exists now only as pressure calculations and regolith surveys. Survey crews have already begun the first regolith cores for it; the administrator declined to name a seal date, noting only that the fourth district took nineteen months from first core to equalized pressure.
