In Karachi, the Makran Corridor Holds — and the Hydrologists Keep One Eye on the Sky

KARACHI — Since the heat-dome week of August closed, the Makran desalination corridor has done the quiet thing it was built to do: run. Eastern Karachi has seen continuous pressure for weeks, the alternating-district schedule has loosened in the interior, and the standpipe disputes that turned violent in early summer have not returned. That is the good news, and the hydrologists insist you hear it fully before they add the caution. "The corridor holds. The corridor has always held on paper," said hydrologist Farida Qadeer, whose sentence about being one dry monsoon from starting over has become something of a city proverb. The margin has not widened; the summer merely did not break it. Downstream storage that the corridor tops up depends on rains the models still cannot agree about, and a single failed monsoon would put Karachi back inside the schedule by October. On the rooftops of Lyari the taps run while the sky is watched with equal attention. At the Lyari pumping station, Qadeer's team logged the dawn line pressure at 3.1 bar on Saturday, steady for the nineteenth consecutive day.
