How We Got Here: The Century Learned to Move Water Before It Learned to Move Trust

The registered climate-migrant count stands past 112 million this month, climbing through the hot season, and the number provokes a familiar despair. But look at the verb. *Registered.* For most of human history the displaced were precisely the uncounted — the people who moved when the land failed and vanished from every ledger that mattered. What changed in this century was not only the scale of movement but the decision, hard-won and institutional, to write these lives down at all. Hearth Relief International and the Passage Trust did not invent migration; they invented the insistence that a migrant is a person on a roll, entitled to shelter and water because she is counted. The figure that alarms us is also, read another way, a measure of how far we have come from the era of the invisible. That is not comfort. A person counted is still a person who lost her home. But history turns on who a society agrees to see, and this one, at terrible cost, agreed to see them.
