We Keep Calling It Relief. August Suggests We Call It Rationing.

The vocabulary of a warming century is a soft one, and I think that softness has started to cost us. All August the word coming off the desks was *relief* — the Sahel corridor held, the taps stayed open, the reactor synced, the reserve did not empty. Every clause is true. But *relief* implies a return toward some normal, and there is no normal to return to at +2.8°C. What the corridors delivered this month was not relief; it was rationing, run competently, at a scale that keeps a region of the drylands alive on a single-digit percentage of reserve. Calling it relief lets those of us far from the standpipe treat a permanent condition as a passing hardship. The engineers on the line already use the harder word. Nafissa Ould Ahmed, who kept the Sahel spine running, would not say her corridor held "with room to spare." Our language should match her honesty. Name the thing. The people in the queue already have.
