The settlement is pressing toward 50,000 permanent residents, a threshold it has chased, one airlock at a time, for the better part of a decade. What strikes an Earth reader most is not the growth but the distance — not the kilometers, which are unimaginable anyway, but the temperament. Down here August was a month of heat domes and thin margins and corridors held by a fingernail. Up there, August was a month of poured regolith concrete and sealed bulkheads, of a community that grows its every calorie and measures its year by construction, not by drought. "We read your summer as history by the time it reaches us," the colony administrator wrote, without unkindness. "We hope it was survivable. Ours was productive."
