"Within Model" Is the Most Frightening Phrase We Print

When the ice bulletin came in on trend this week, the relief in the room was the thing worth examining.

"Within Model" Is the Most Frightening Phrase We Print — The Lost Archive, 2124

The Polar Cryosphere Survey published its quarterly Antarctic bulletin two days ago, and the phrase that carried it was "within model." Ice loss accelerated; the acceleration matched the projections; the metrics stayed, as the scientists put it, on trend. I watched a newsroom exhale at those words, and I have been uneasy about that exhale ever since. "Within model" does not mean safe. It means the machinery we built to frighten ourselves is working — that we successfully predicted a bad thing, and the bad thing arrived on schedule. Dr. Ada Adeyemi and her colleagues are scrupulous people doing scrupulous work near the Thwaites Glacier, and they are right to report exactly what the data says and nothing more. The failure, if there is one, is ours: we have learned to hear "on trend" as reassurance when it is merely accuracy. A forecast that comes true is not good news. It is a bill, arriving when it said it would. We should stop mistaking the punctuality of the invoice for a pardon.
