The City's Last Warm Evenings Fill the Rooftop Gardens

Before the season turns, Seoul crowds its green roofs for one more shared meal.

SEOUL — The rooftop gardens that cap this city's residential towers are having their busiest week of the year, as families gather to wring the last warmth from a summer that ran long and hot. On one such roof in the Mapo district, retired schoolteacher Ji-woo Han, 71, laid out a communal table for neighbors of every age. "In my grandmother's time, you fled the heat," she said. "Now we've learned to sit in the cool of the evening and be grateful for it." The gardens, a modest civic answer to a +2.8°C climate, double as heat-shelter and gathering place, and this week they are simply full. Community organizers say attendance always peaks now, in the narrow window before the northern cold returns and drives the tables indoors. There is nothing monumental in it — a shared meal, a borrowed chair, children underfoot. But in a year measured in migrant counts and reservoir levels, an ordinary warm evening, freely shared, is its own quiet form of abundance.
