The Unbreakable Line Is Only as Honest as Its Keys

Q-Net secures the channel it cannot make faster; a Geneva audit tests the difference.

The Unbreakable Line Is Only as Honest as Its Keys — The Lost Archive, 2124

GENEVA — For all the mythology around the Q-Net backbone, its physicists keep repeating an unglamorous caveat: the quantum layer secures a message, it does not speed one. Entanglement guarantees that a key cannot be copied unseen; it carries no information itself. That distinction is the subject of a routine audit this week at Alpine Geneva Polytechnic, where engineers stress-tested key-distribution nodes against tampering. "People hear 'quantum' and imagine instant messages across the solar system," said one auditor at the lab. "What we actually protect is trust — that the key at each end is the same key, and that nobody read it in between." The finding, consistent with the network's operation since 2110, was undramatic: the nodes held. Dr. Wei-Lin Tan of the Singapore Institute, whose team is preparing a larger processor demonstration next month, called such audits "the boring maintenance that keeps a boring promise." The promise is unbreakable encryption, and the point of the audit is to keep it that way.
