The Longevity Divide Meets the Cold Season Nobody's Body Escapes

Augmented or not, the coming winter asks the same question of every clock.

The Longevity Divide Meets the Cold Season Nobody's Body Escapes — The Lost Archive, 2124

The augmentation divide is usually drawn as a line between two kinds of future — the enhanced who can buy decades and the natural-born who cannot — and for most of the year that line feels absolute. Then the seasons turn, and something older reasserts itself. A winter cold snap, geriatric physicians note, is one of the few forces that asks the same brutal question of every body in a city, augmented or not: can this clock take the strain of the cold. The enhanced have real advantages — regulated circulation, reinforced tissue, the quiet biotech that keeps the wealthy walking at a hundred and ten. But the coming cold season is a reminder that augmentation raises the ceiling without abolishing the floor, and that the floor is where most of the twelve billion still live. "An implant buys you margin, not immortality," said a clinic director who treats both populations. "Come January, the enhanced grandmother and the natural one are both my patients. The cold does not check anyone's upgrades at the door." The divide is real, and widening. But the season, at least, is still democratic — and the season is coming for everyone's clock.
