The Arithmetic Flips: The North Begins to Count Toward the Cold
With the cooling peak behind it, the build-out faces the question of December's heating demand.

For four months the great fusion build-out has been measured against a single adversary: heat. Every new reactor, every micro-unit in a desert town, was counted in air-conditioners kept running and pumps kept powered through a punishing northern summer. This week, quietly, the arithmetic flips. With the cooling peak behind it, the northern grid begins to count the other way — toward December, toward the heating load of a hemisphere that still, +2.8°C world or not, gets brutally cold in its winters and must be warmed by the same reactors that just spent the summer keeping it from cooking. The Aurora Fusion Works unit that came online this month, nudging the reconnected grid past thirty-one percent, was sized with both seasons in mind. "People think a warming world means we've stopped needing heat," said an Aurora grid planner. "Tell that to a northern city in January. The reactor doesn't get a rest — it just changes what it's fighting." The build-out's real test, planners say, was never the summer it survived. It is the winter it now has to plan for, and winter counts in the opposite direction.
