How We Learned to Read Ice at All
A century ago, the Antarctic was a rumor of instruments; today it is a lattice — and still it withholds its ending.

It is worth remembering, on a Sunday when a single bulletin can move markets and unsettle capitals, how recently we could read the ice at all. A century ago the Antarctic was monitored by a scatter of stations and the occasional heroic traverse; the continent answered in rumor and inference. The dense sensor lattice that now threads the monitored sectors — the one whose readings the Polar Cryosphere Survey published this week — would have looked like sorcery to the glaciologists of the 2020s, who would have given a great deal for a hundredth of it. And yet the deepest thing has not changed: we can measure the ice far better than we can foretell it, and the gap between those two verbs is where every honest scientist still lives. The instruments improved by orders of magnitude. The humility they demand did not shrink at all. That, more than any single quarter's number, is the long view — that knowing more has taught us, precisely, the shape of what we do not know.
