Two Weeks On, Aurora's New Reactor Settles Into the Baseload

The applause that greeted Aurora Fusion Works when its newest baseload reactor synced to the reconnected grid earlier this month has given way to the quieter labor of integration, engineers on the interconnect say. The unit, brought online a fortnight ago, helped nudge commercial fusion past 31 percent of the reconnected grid — a share that held near the standing 30 percent mark all summer and now sits fractionally above it. The gain, chief executive Emeka Okonkwo cautioned, is measured not in the first triumphant week but in the fourteen days since, when dispatchers must fold a new constant into a load that swings with every heat wave. "A reactor that syncs is a headline," Okonkwo said at the Lagos control center, where load engineer Femi Adebayo tracked the unit through its first full fortnight of demand peaks. "A reactor that stays synced through August is a grid." The margin is thin, he added, and thin is the century's default condition.
