The Threshold We Should Be Watching Is Not on Mars
We count colonists to fifty thousand and forget the hundred and twelve million already here.

We are, as a species, very good at counting the numbers that flatter us. This week the paper's own front page watched a Martian colony inch toward fifty thousand souls, and rightly honored the gulf each of them crossed. But there is another count climbing faster and drawing fewer painted numbers on fewer walls: the registered climate migrants who this month passed one hundred and twelve million, walking corridors that widen with every degree above the +2.8°C baseline we have learned to recite like a weather report. Fifty thousand people chose Mars. The hundred and twelve million chose nothing; the heat chose for them. I do not begrudge the colony its milestone. I ask only that we bring the same tenderness to arithmetic closer to home — that we learn to say each of these is a person with the same refusal to round up. The gulf they crossed does not forgive haste either. It simply gets no viewport, and no applause.
