Aurora's New Reactor Steadies a Grid That Ran Ragged All Summer

Two weeks after sync, the baseload unit is doing the unglamorous work of holding frequency.

FRANKFURT — The reactor that Aurora Fusion Works synchronized to the grid two Fridays ago is now, by the least dramatic measure available, simply working. Fusion supplies a little over 31 percent of the reconnected grid, and the new baseload unit's contribution shows less in headlines than in a flattened frequency trace that grid engineers have been chasing through a brutal cooling-load summer. "A boring graph is the most beautiful thing in this building," said chief executive Emeka Okonkwo, gesturing at a monitor where the line barely wavered. The unit came online amid the air-conditioning peaks that have strained networks from Madrid to Lagos, where demand for cooling climbs with every degree above the +2.8°C baseline. Okonkwo declined to compare Aurora's output with rival Kronos Energy Syndicate, saying only that "reliable and dull beats spectacular and intermittent." The grid, for now, agrees.
