In Jakarta, a Neighborhood Choir Sings the Water Back Onto the Map

JAKARTA — When the fresh-water mains finally reached the kampung this spring, a retired schoolteacher did the only thing that felt proportionate to twenty years of jug-buying: she started a choir. What began as a dozen neighbors on a Tuesday has become a fixture of the district's evenings, a rotating cast of forty who write verses about the things a corridor changes — the vendor no longer at the corner, the first bath a child took in clean water she did not have to ration. "We are not commemorating a pipe," the founder said, laughing. "We are keeping the memory of what it was like before, so the children understand what they have."
