With Brazil's Vote Counted, the Safety Review Stays Open

A week after a national augmentation vote, the harder question — is the neural interface safe — remains unanswered by design.

The Brazilian federal augmentation vote on Saturday 16 August settled a political question, augmentation clinicians say, but not a clinical one: the safety review of the current neural-interface generation remains open and contested, as it has been all year. Somaform Augmetics founder Julian Morrow, whose firm makes the interfaces at the center of the debate, argued in a São Paulo appearance that the review's slowness is a feature. "A review that closes fast is a review that missed something," he said. Among the roughly five percent of humans now carrying some augmentation, the interface line is a small fraction, but a fast-growing one, and regulators have declined to certify it as cleared while long-term data accrues. Dr. Naomi Eze, reporting from the São Paulo clinics, found practitioners weary of being asked for a verdict the evidence does not yet support. "Patients want a yes or a no," one neuro-technician said. "The honest answer is still: we are watching."
