The federal augmentation referendum that Brazilians decided on Saturday, 16 August has handed lawmakers in Brasília the harder half of the task: turning a national verdict into workable law. The vote established the principle; the drafting committees convened this week must now define consent, employer limits, medical oversight and the line between elective and coerced enhancement — questions the ballot could not. A committee coordinator described the mood as "sober, not triumphant," noting that roughly one in twenty people worldwide is already augmented and that the statute will be read as a template far beyond Brazil. Civil-society groups pressed for a clause barring workplaces from making augmentation a condition of hire; industry representatives argued for flexibility. Neither got everything. "A vote is a sentence," the coordinator said. "A law is the paragraph, and the paragraph is where people actually live." The committee expects months of work. In a chamber in Brasília, the arguing has only started.
