On the Last Dry Rooftop of the Block, a Boot of Tomatoes and a Whole Street's Opinion

Everyone on the block has a theory about Old Emil's tomatoes, and everyone is wrong except Old Emil, who is not telling. On the last dry rooftop above a street where the ground floors flood at the wrong tides, he keeps a row of tomato plants in a salvaged rubber boot and three cracked buckets, and at dusk, when the pavement finally cools, half the building climbs up to argue about them. Too much water. Not enough. The wrong angle to the evening sun. A neighbor swears by the eggshells; another calls that superstition and swears by nothing, which produces nothing. The tomatoes, indifferent to all of it, ripen anyway. It is the smallest thing — a fistful of fruit on a hot rooftop in a century that has bigger problems by orders of magnitude. It is also, on that rooftop at that hour, the entire point. The heat rises, the tides come, the corridors hum somewhere below, and a dozen people who have every reason to despair instead spend the cool hour disagreeing, happily, about a tomato.
