Q-Net Locks a City's Records the Way a Vault Locks a Door
The quantum-secured backbone secures the channel, not the message's speed — a distinction the century keeps having to relearn.

SINGAPORE — When a regional health archive migrated its records onto the Q-Net backbone this month, the pitch was not that data would move faster. It would not. The distinction the Singapore Institute keeps patiently redrawing is that Q-Net secures the channel — quantum key distribution makes the line unbreakable — without transmitting anything faster than ordinary light. "People hear 'quantum' and imagine instant," said Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, a physicist at the Institute who spends as much time correcting that as building the thing. "Entanglement locks the door. It does not teleport the mail." The migration matters less for speed than for trust: a records system a hostile actor cannot quietly read. The Institute, which has hinted at larger processor demonstrations later in the season, treats each rollout as ordinary plumbing. For the archivist who threw the switch, Mei Chandra, the reward was mundane and total — a database she no longer had to lie awake worrying someone was reading over her shoulder.
