Aurora's New Reactor Steadies a Grid That Ran Ragged in the Heat

Twelve days online, the baseload unit is already blunting the evening peaks that strained the network all summer.

The baseload reactor Aurora Fusion Works synced a week ago Friday and brought online on the ninth is doing the unglamorous work it was built for: holding the evening peak. Grid operators in the reconnected northern network say the new unit has trimmed the brownout margin on the hottest days, with fusion now supplying past 31 percent of the grid, up from the roughly 30 percent that held for most of the year. "It is not the megawatts people notice, it is the flat line," said a control-room supervisor, Lena Fournier, watching a load curve that used to spike at dusk when cooling demand surged. Aurora's chief executive, Emeka Okonkwo, has framed the firm's build-out as a race against heat itself, each reactor a hedge against the summers doing the straining. Rival capacity near the Thwaites Glacier still books the larger raw output, but Fournier's concern is narrower and nightly: whether the network holds when twelve billion people reach for the same switch at the same hour.
